Born and raised in New York City, the daughter of filmmaker and poet Jonas Mekas and photographer Hollis Melton, Oona grew up immersed in the world of art and cinema. Some of her first memories are of dark theaters illuminated by the light of a projector, watching works by everyone from Stan Brakhage and Harry Smith to Buster Keaton and Sergio Leone.
A performer from an early age, she danced with the New York City Ballet and starting playing the violin at age four. Fifteen years ago, Oona started her career in film as a curator at Anthology Film Archives in New York City and abroad. She had the honor of studying acting with the late Fred Kareman at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She continues to follow her artistic passions as an actor, writer and filmmaker. Splitting her time between New York and Los Angeles, she has been in many theater productions, countless independent films and appears regularly on television. Realizing her childhood dream of being on both sides of the camera, she makes her directorial debut this summer with The Sleepy Man, a short film based on the short story Sleepy People by Jonathan Lethem. Her most recent on-camera work includes playing Sasha in newest Miranda July film, The Future, which just premiered at Sundance and was an official selection at the Berlinale and will be in theaters July 29th. She can be seen soon in Destruction Party, also starring Lacey Chabert, Amy Davidson & Vanessa Zima. She also stars in Mojave, a short film by Peter Sasowsky, now in post-production. Oona also gets her "on-set fix" by regularly booking commercial work. In the last few years, she has booked over 25 national television commercials. Oona is a long-standing board member of Anthology Film Archives, a theater and archive in New York City dedicated to the preservation and screening of cinema in all forms, with an emphasis on experimental and avant-garde film and video. Passionate about living a life that is kind to the planet, she follows a vegan diet and drives a car that runs on waste vegetable oil. She shares her experiences in her blog, The Lovely Hearts Club. She practices yoga daily and and teaches Integral Yoga hatha and prenatal yoga in Los Angeles, Lovely Hearts Yoga. She is a proud cultural ambassador for the city of Vilnius, Lithuania. She currently lives in Los Angeles. |
